The point was that Reagan knew who his countrymen were. But for us it is an unknowable but ever expanding number of people.

How can we hold out the hand of support when those who take it might not be known to us, in the sense they may not have been neighbours five minutes ago.

How can we, in Britain, be expected to show compassion and support to unlimited numbers - but that s what the Conservative led coalition asks us to do; impossible!
