In their reaction to recent attacks in Israel, a number of Republicans have reiterated their backing of "robust" US support to the country, including increased pressure to end the anti-Israel incitement heavily present within the Palestinian territories, and challenging the Obama Administration to reevaluate the steep, one sided concessions being pushed upon the Israeli government.
In the first week's of March alone there has been the bus bombing in Jerusalem (which claimed the life of one Israeli citizen while also wounding 25 others), repeated shelling from Gaza militants, and the brutal murder of a Jewish family inside their West Bank home.
Below are a few of recent statements from prominent Republicans condemning the recent violence and calling for President Obama to rethink his view on US foreign policy with regard to Israel:
House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said in a statement criticizing the Obama Administration's harsh treatment of Israel that:
Today’s bombing in Jerusalem is another chilling reminder of the obstacles Israel faces in its quest to live in peace with its neighbors. Israel is a true friend to the United States and a vital strategic ally in an unstable region. In the face of unremitting terror, Israel can count on the continued support of the United States as exercises its right to defend its people.
Within the past two weeks, Palestinian terrorists in Gaza have launched dozens of unprovoked rocket attacks at innocent Israelis, while in the West Bank a terrorist brutally murdered a family as they slept in their home. These attacks must not be downplayed as mere episodes in a game of tit-for-tat between Israelis and Palestinians. There is absolutely no justification for deliberate and deadly attacks on innocent civilians.
This kind of violence does not emerge in a vacuum; it is incubated through education and nurtured by popular culture. The sooner the world comes to grips with this reality, the sooner that there will be peace in the region. That’s why we must use the recent attacks to address the root cause of this violence: anti-Israel incitement in Palestinian mosques, schools and media – and the blanket refusal on the part of the Palestinians to accept Israel’s right to exist that it has created.
The Administration has called on Israel to make sweeping concessions that I believe will endanger its security, but it doesn’t seem to demand similar from the Palestinians. That’s why I support bipartisan efforts in the House and Senate that call on the White House to put an end to anti-Israel incitement in the Palestinian territories. No matter how much we desire Mideast peace, it will remain a pipe dream so long as Palestinian culture makes martyrs of terrorists who target innocents.”
Freshman Senator Marco Rubio, who visited Israel shortly after he was elected in November, commented that:
The bombing in Jerusalem is another tragic reminder of the persistent threats to Israel’s security. I condemn this murderous act in the strongest terms and pray for the victims, their families and the entire state of Israel that mourns.
As long as terrorists reject Israel’s right to exist and deploy these types of heinous acts, there cannot be lasting peace in the region. America has a responsibility to stand with Israel and support its right to protect the Israeli people. We must also insist that the onus for change to achieve a two-state solution be on rejecting violence and accepting Israel’s existence.
House Foreign Affairs Commitee Chair Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who has been a very vocal advocate for US political support of Israel, said of the situation:
This attack in Jerusalem, and the continued attacks on Israel from Gaza, are sobering reminders that extremist groups and their state sponsors continue to pose a clear and growing threat to Israel.
Violence against Israel perpetrated by extremist groups is relentless, and illustrates the need for the U.S. to continue to provide robust security assistance to our key ally. The same extremists who seek Israel’s destruction also seek the destruction of the United States. Strengthening Israel’s security against our common enemies also strengthens U.S. security.
We must also provide strong and unequivocal political support for Israel by opposing efforts to pressure Israel into making concessions, as well as efforts to deny Israel and other democracies the right to defend themselves against extremist threats.
