Even Democrats don’t think ObamaCare’s that great anymore.
According to a new poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation, “Democratic voters lost confidence that one of President Barack Obama’s major programs will improve their lives.” The poll finds that 51% of the public don’t like the law, compared to just 34% who do.
More Americans have disliked the law than liked it all year now, but what really stands out in the latest poll is the drop in the percentage of those who like it:
What’s driving this? A sharp drop in the percentage of Democrats who think the law will make their lives better:
Two thoughts on this:
Eroding support for ObamaCare among Democrats is the worst news Obama can get right now. The failed stimulus was a problem, but Obama can always make the case they he was trying to respond to a bad economy with less than ideal policy but did the best he could. In every case, when the left complains about Obama, there is always some recourse. But ObamaCare was different all along: it was a new policy, a new expression of the kind of change Obama promised. It’s the most “purely Obama” thing he’s done. And it’s falling apart among his constituents just when he needs their help the most. What else does he have to stand on? Everything else makes him look worse. He’s certainly out of ideas, that’s been clear for awhile. Coupled with a bad economy, this poll is bad news indeed.
The second thought concerns Mitt Romney: given the public distaste for ObamaCare, I find it astounding that he has held on to the frontrunner status given RomneyCare. He’s never been able to crack the 25% ceiling consistently in the polls, but he’s holding his own amidst a public that dislikes ObamaCare…and by extension will have no great love for RomneyCare. His contention that it’s just, well, different at the state level is either working, or people are disliking ObamaCare more because they’re losing faith in its originator and principal message-bearer.
