Tax issues have been all over the news, but freshman GOP Congressman Tim Huelskamp says Congress has dropped the ball on the Republican promise to put a tax-reform plan on the House floor.
“The Republican plan is still this, that we are supposed to have a debate on the floor of the House,” Huelskamp said. “I think that the best plan is one we actually could bring to debate on, and I think we’ve lost that opportunity.
“That was the plan to do that this fall.”
Huelskamp also expressed frustration with the lack of transparency with the supercommittee and called it typical of Washington’s way of doing things because its cuts don’t take effect until 2013.
“I thought it was a very, very bad idea to create a non-transparent, backdoor committee to put together something that is the responsibility of 535 members of Congress,” Huelskamp said. “ I of course voted no on that and spoke about it in that way. I expect nothing good to come out of it.
“What I’m hearing about is nothing.”
He says that the supercommittee members have taken a practical vow of silence when it come to discussing their deliberations, even with fellow members of Congress.
“It seems to be apparently that quite a few K Street lobbyists know quite a bit about what’s going on in that room,” Huelskamp said.
