It may be hard to recall with record spending levels and the first ever credit downgrade in US history, but remember when about a decade ago the public held just over $3 trillion in US debt? Or when the Congressional Budget Office projected that American debt could not only be paid off by 2008, but that the country could easily boast a surplus of $2 trillion by 2011.
If only that were the current reality.
