They topped the Des Moines Register's inaugural 2012 straw poll in Iowa, and this week it appears Mitt Romney and Michele Bachmann are taking their early success to the Granite State as well.
After a busy weekend of campaigning, Mitt Romney continues to hold a commanding lead over his fellow GOP competitors in New Hampshire, a lead which he has consistently held since earlier this year.
According to the latest WMUR Granite State Poll conducted by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center, 35 percent of likely Republican primary voters said they would vote for the former Massachusetts governor, nearly three times the support for second place candidate, Michele Bachmann.
Although nowhere near Romney's numbers, the Minnesota Congresswoman still has a lot to smile about, climbing to 12% backing among GOP voters, making her the the only other candidate to hold double digit support in New Hampshire.
In comparison:
- Ron Paul is at 7%
- Tim Pawlenty is at 3%
- Jon Huntsman 2%
- Hermain Cain 2%
- Newt Gingrich 1%
- Rick Santorum <1%
- Gary Johnson <1%
Undeclared candidate Rudy Giuliani tied Paul at 7%, and Sarah Palin and Rick Perry both came in below 5% of the vote.
Overall:
In a hypothetical presidential race between Romney and President Barack Obama, Romney leads with 47 percent of the vote to Obama's 43 percent. Romney has held a lead over Obama since February.
When likely Republican voters were asked which Republican they would not vote for under any circumstances, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin led with 23 percent, while 16 percent said former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and 12 percent said Ron Paul.
