With just days to go before the August 2 debt limit deadline, Americans' confidence in Congress (unsurprisingly) has reached a new low.
According to the latest congressional poll from Rasmussen Reports, only 6% of likely voters rate lawmakers' current performance as 'excellent.' Overall:
Sixty-one percent (61%) now think the national legislators are doing a poor job, a jump of nine points from a month ago.
Most voters don't care much for the way either party is performing in the federal debt ceiling debate. The majority of voters are worried the final deal will raise taxes too much and won't cut spending enough.
And on top of the dismal job ratings, just 11% of voters believe this Congress has passed any legislation that will significantly improve Americans' lives, tying the lowest ever rating (January 2009) in nearly five years of poll analysis.
With consumer confidence also taking a dive amid the current political standoff, and just days to go before a possible US default (and downgrade), it will be interesting to see how approval numbers could change further over the course of the coming weeks, particularly considering the overwhelming flood of input from constituents over ongoing budget negotiations.
