Citizens across the country are celebrating all things American this weekend, but when it comes to year-round patriotism a handful of states appear to rise above the rest.
As the nation turns it's attention to honoring our forefathers and the sacrifices of our peers, The Daily Beast examined which states turn this focus into real, year-round action, such as support for veterans and voter turn out among residents.
In looking at elections records from 2008 - 2010, population figures from the 2010 Census, and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs 2010 statistics, overall, when it comes to individual indicators:
West Virginia spends more than any other state—an average of $7.81 per vet—for veteran compensation, medical care, education and other outlays. Minnesota has the greatest voter turnout of any state in the nation. And, Alaska has the largest veteran population.
With four Republican led state's rounding out the top five rankings on the list, here's a look at the country's 20 most patriotic places according to the The Daily Beast:
