Here's the takeaway from Pew's poll today on how the public views the GOP Medicare plan: older Americans whom the plan wouldn't affect don't like it, but younger Americans do.
For once, an interesting poll that doesn't cut by party identification, but by age.
Take a look at this graph:
There's not a big partisan divide here. Republicans are pretty evenly split (which is why, of course, a lot of GOP members are nervous...), and - surprisingly - so are Democrats.
No, partisan divides on this issue aren't as big of a deal as one might think, which admits of both peril and opportunity.
The big divide is demographic: age.
The GOP plan wouldn't touch anyone over age 55. And yet that's the group most opposed to the reforms.
The younger you go, the more support you find for the plan.
Republicans need help with younger voters. Who would have thought Medicare reform might be the ticket?
