While lesser known candidates Herman Cain and Michele Bachmann continue to maintain the most favorable Positive Intensity Scores among the prospective 2012 field, the highly recognized Newt Gingrich has seen his own image rating drop significantly since announcing his candidacy in May.
Falling from a score of 19 down to six since early April, Gingrich has one of the lowest scores among likely/confirmed candidates, with an unfavorable rating that has risen a total of 13 points in this time frame (the highest among all contenders currently tracked in the survey).
Gallup points out that:
Overall, 61% of Republicans who recognize Gingrich now view him favorably, while 32% view him unfavorably. This gives Gingrich the second-lowest favorable and the highest unfavorable rating of any candidate Gallup is tracking.
With a number of Republicans expected to officially confirm their 2012 candidacy in the next few weeks, it will be interesting to see how candidates' scores continue to shift in the coming weeks, especially as lesser known contenders gain recognition among voters
