Seven presidential hopeful square off tonight on CNN. Here are five questions that I'd like to see asked of the candidates at random so the American public can get a good sense of how they think about big domestic issues:
1. Given the need to boost educational outcomes so tomorrow's Americans can compete on the global stage, what kinds of educational reforms do you support? (Important follow-up question: And if you support sending money and decision-making out of Washington back to the States, isn't that the same thing as sending money and decision-making back to unions that have a worse track record than Washington?)
2. Workers' incomes are shrinking as a share of national income, and middle class wage stagnation is a stark reality. Is there anything you've said in your public remarks on economic growth has anything to do with boosting middle American incomes?
3. You're fond of saying you support "comprehensive tax reform" and "regulatory reform," so can you say which, if any tax deductions and credits you would leave in a reformed tax code, and can you list five major regulations you would be sure to axe?
4. Let's say you're elected, and you and Congress succeed in repealing ObamaCare. What three specific policies would you say are essential to replacing it (if you think, in fact, repeal isn't enough)?
5. If you get your way on Medicare, would you say that people under 55 should be saving more to prepare for paying for a greater share of their health care costs?
