Another candidate confirms! According to Ptittsburgh Tribune-Review's Salina Zito, former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum is set to officially announce his 2012 bid in early June:
Former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum will come home to Western Pennsylvania to formally announce his candidacy for president on June 6, his campaign acknowledged today.
"He will make his announcement in Somerset County," said Keith Schmidt, who is coordinating Santorum's announcement, "somewhere near to where his grandfather worked in the coal mines in Tyler Hill."
Schmidt, a public affairs consultant, said he had not worked out details for the announcement.
Santorum, 53, who lives in Northern Virginia but maintains a home in Penn Hills, will launch his campaign there for a number of reasons, Schmidt said. It is the county where his blue-collar family began its quest to fulfill the American dream, and it is not far from where United Airlines Flight 93 crashed near Shanksville in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
The firebrand Republican intends to make national security a key message in his campaign for the White House, along with the need to restore opportunities for the middle class.
The man lost by eighteen (18) points in 2006. Could he carry Pennsylvania?
