We knew it would happen sooner or later. Before Republicans even get around to introducing entitlement reform provisions in their spring budget, the Obama administration is already demogoguing the "senior issue" in the context of the spending cuts debate.
HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has been dispatched to deliver the message to seniors that current GOP plans to reduce spending and cut funds for Obamacare will leave Medicare claims unpaid.
Now, Republicans' hands aren't exactly clean on the demogoguery front. They've gotten mileage out of this issue in the past, too.
But this is silly right now. The Democrats cannot get themselves anywhere close to making needed cuts to the budget or reforms to entitlements. So this is their chosen path of resistance.
Republicans have known this was coming. They should be direct and upfront with voters about what their cuts plans mean and don't mean, and what their coming entitlemet reform plans will mean. Pollster after pollster will tell them this will hurt them. But it's time to put some faith in what direct, honest messaging can achieve.
And, for what it's worth, our poll - just out today - shows that grassroots conservatives are warming to the idea of entitlement reform.
