In an interview with the London Times ($) George W Bush warned against "isolationism, protectionism and nativism". Benedict Brogan of The Telegraph interpreted this as a warning against the tendency of some Tea Partiers towards a more inward-looking, domestic-focused Republican politics.
Yesterday, talking to the FT, John McCain also signalled concern at new Republican Congressmen wanting to pull up the drawbridge to the outside world. He said, “I suspect that some of these new members of Congress are more isolationist than some of their predecessors.”
The foreign policy views of the new GOP majority are also weighed by former Bush Chief speechwriter Mike Gerson in his Washington Post column. He saw risks of isolationism, particularly in regard to spending on global poverty.
